How EPF (provident fund) is calculated
The Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) is a retirement savings scheme run by the EPFO. Both you and your employer contribute every month based on your basic salary plus dearness allowance (DA).
You contribute 12% of basic + DA. Your employer also contributes 12%, but it is split: 8.33% goes to the Employee Pension Scheme (EPS) — capped at 8.33% of the ₹15,000 wage ceiling, i.e. ₹1,250 per month — and the remaining 3.67% goes into your EPF account. So your EPF corpus grows from your full 12% plus the employer's EPF share, while EPS separately funds your pension.
The ₹15,000 wage ceiling
The statutory PF wage ceiling is ₹15,000 per month. Some employers restrict contributions to 12% of ₹15,000 (₹1,800), while others contribute on your actual basic. Use the toggle above to see both. The EPS portion is always capped at ₹1,250 regardless of your basic.
Interest and tax
EPF earns interest at a rate the EPFO declares each year (this tool defaults to 8.25%, which you can change). EPF has EEE tax status after five years of continuous service — your contributions, the interest and the final withdrawal are tax-free, subject to limits on very high contributions.
PF calculator — frequently asked questions
How is PF calculated on salary?
Employee PF is 12% of basic salary plus dearness allowance. The employer also contributes 12%, split into 8.33% towards the Employee Pension Scheme (EPS, capped at ₹1,250) and the remaining 3.67% into the EPF account.
What is the PF wage ceiling in India?
The statutory EPF wage ceiling is ₹15,000 per month. Employers may restrict PF to 12% of ₹15,000 (₹1,800), or contribute on the full actual basic. The EPS pension portion is always capped at 8.33% of ₹15,000, i.e. ₹1,250.
What is the current EPF interest rate?
The EPF interest rate is declared each year by the EPFO. This calculator uses a default of 8.25% per annum, which you can change to match the latest notified rate.
Is EPF tax-free?
EPF enjoys EEE (exempt-exempt-exempt) tax status when you complete five years of continuous service — contributions, interest and the final withdrawal are tax-free, subject to conditions on very high contributions.
What is the difference between EPF and EPS?
EPF is your provident fund savings that you withdraw as a lump sum. EPS is the pension scheme funded by 8.33% of the employer's contribution (capped at ₹1,250/month); it provides a monthly pension after retirement rather than adding to your EPF corpus.
